About WFD 2023

The World Forum for Democracy is a unique platform for political decision-makers and activists to debate solutions to key challenges for democracies worldwide. By identifying and analysing experimental initiatives and practices, the Forum highlights and encourages democracy innovations at the grassroots and their transfer on a systemic level in order to strengthen the foundations of democratic societies. The Forum thus contributes to the evolution of democracy towards more participatory and inclusive structures and institutions.

The young people attending the World Forum will take part in the various Forum Talks, Labs, and side events. Depending on their interests and skills, participants may be assigned certain roles in the Forum Talks, Labs, and side events (rapporteurs, discussants, moderators, etc.).

The youth delegates should work together as active participants and contributors to the Forum, presenting their unique perspectives and ideas. In addition to the laboratories and side events, participants are free to plan additional activities in order to express their opinions and share their dreams for democracy.

Up to 60 participants will be chosen by the Youth Department and its team of trainers based on the aforementioned characteristics. Additionally, the selection process will consider for a gender and regional balance as well as a variety of experiences, organisations, institutions, and initiatives.


Eligibility

In order to apply and to be selected and participate in the World Forum 2023, Youth applicants should:

- Be aged between 18-30 (exceptions can be made in special cases)

- Participants from all the countries are eligible to apply and participate.

Be able to communicate and work in English.

Be motivated to contribute to developing new ideas on democracy & peace.

Be ready to share own challenges faced in relation to democracy& peace.

Be ready to adopt a solution-oriented approach by bringing in new ideas and visions on the question of democracy & peace.

Be available to participate fully in the World Forum for Democracy and the preparation process beforehand (online preparation and onsite presence in Strasbourg).

Note: The common working language of the event will be English. Candidates must be able to use English independently in order to be able to work and communicate efficiently.


Finance and Benefits

Travel expenses and visa costs will be reimbursed upon presentation of the relevant receipts, according to the rules of the Council of Europe. The payment will be made by bank transfer after the Forum.

Board and lodging are provided and paid for by the Council of Europe during the dates of the activity (arrival on Friday, the 3 rd of November and departure on Thursday, the 9th of November)

Participants will be accommodated  in shared rooms at the European Youth Centre in Strasbourg (EYCS). 

Wi-Fi is available in the rooms.

The EYCS is accessible to young people with disabilities and ready to adapt to young people's special needs in order to ensure full inclusion and quality working conditions.


Timeline

Application deadline: 12th of July 2023, 13:00 CET

Selection Results: Candidates will be informed during the first week of September 2023 if their application has been accepted or rejected, and if they have been put on the waiting list.

Arrival day: Friday, the 3rd of November 2023

Preparatory meeting: 4-5 November 2023

Dates of the WFD: 6-8th of November 2023

Departure day: 6-8 November 2023

Part 2A short 1-minute video that must be posted on an online platform (e.g. YouTube, Vimeo, etc) that can be easily accessed with a link attached to the online application form. In this video you should talk about the applicant’s thoughts on democracy & peace and what should make the Forum choose them to attend this particular edition of the WFD.
