About the EU Council traineeship 

Twice a year, the Council offers 5-month paid traineeships for university graduates to gain work experience at the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union in Brussels. Traineeships are available in various departments, providing insights into the work of the Council and the European Union as a whole. It's a great opportunity for young professionals interested in EU affairs and policymaking to gain practical experience and network within the EU institutions.

As a trainee, you will also get the opportunity to take part in a wide range of activities, such as:

- helping out during EU and international summits;

- visits to and conferences at other EU institutions in Brussels, Strasbourg and Luxembourg;

- Council and Parliament simulation games;

- volunteering for projects in other units.


What trainees do?

The Council offers traineeship opportunities in many areas to suit candidates with diverse profiles. You will have to select two areas in your application. 

As a trainee, you will work within a team at the General Secretariat of the Council. There are two main job types available:

1. If you will work in a policy team, you'll be involved in tasks related to the Council's legislative activities and meeting preparations. Policy areas include:

  • Economy and finance
  • Environment and climate
  • Foreign affairs
  • Justice and home affairs

2. If you will work in a support team, you will be involved in activities that support the cross-sectoral work of the Council in areas such as:

  • Communication and media relations
  • Human resources
  • Information technology (IT)
  • Translation

Trainees’ tasks

The tasks assigned to trainees varies across teams based on their specific requirements. Here are some examples:

- Assisting in meeting preparation and minute drafting

- Participating in Council preparatory body meetings (policy department)

- Conducting research for specific projects

- Gathering, organising, and analysing data

- Assisting in document, note, and publication production

- Contributing to event organisation and communication activities

- Providing document translations


Eligibility | Who can apply?

- EU Citizens with university degree. You must hold passport or ID card from EU country, Residence permits are not accepted.

- All the candidates with diverse backgrounds  are welcome to apply as EU Council offer traineeships in different areas (policy, administration, communication, IT, etc.)

- Candidates must be with a good knowledge of English or French (at least level C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)

- You must have very good knowledge of at least two EU official languages.

- Participant must be with No previous training (paid or unpaid) or employment for more than six weeks at an EU institution, body, agency or office.

- There is no age limit, any EU Citizen with university degree can apply.


Expenses and Benefits

- Each trainee is entitled to receive a monthly grant of 1,376.88 EUR net. 

- Two days of leave per month worked.

- Monthly allowance of 60 EUR to be used in the Council’s restaurants.

- Accident insurance, access to health insurance, option to join the council gym with 30 EUR, and access to all Council library resources and services. 

- Trainees who are recruited from a place more than 50 km from Brussels are entitled to a contribution towards travel expenses at the beginning and at the end of the traineeship.

Selection and interview: April- June 2024

Traineeship period: 1 September 2024 to 31 January 2025
