Green Fingers | ESC Team Volunteering Project in Zagreb, Croatia (Fully Funded)

An open call for young people from all over Europe to apply for the  6-week ESC Team volunteering project "Green Fingers" which aims to maintain urban school gardens in a few primary schools in Zagreb and outside of Zagreb, Croatia. The project is organised by OAZA and funded by the European Solidarity Corps program of the European Union.

About the volunteering

The “Green Fingers” is an ESC opportunity that will bring together a volunteering team of 10 participants to maintain urban school gardens in a few primary schools in Zagreb and outside of Zagreb, organising Garden festivals for local communities and cleaning needed areas and restoring them to their natural habitat. 

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES during the volunteering project will include:

- Gardening in school gardens: involves some physical work, getting dirty or wet, coming in contact with insects etc.

- Promo activity: a public awareness event in the open-air.

- Volunteering actions: cleaning local areas and restoring them to their natural state.

- Organising Garden festivals: creating space for intercultural exchange as volunteers present their countries and cultures through workshops.

- Organising and holding intercultural event for the broader public.


Eligibility | Who can apply?

- young people aged 18-30

- citizens (or with stay permit) in the following countries: Albania, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Georgia, Hungary, Italy, Kosovo, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Latvia, Luxembourg, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Sweden, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain.

- interested in environment protection, creative expression (DIY, arts and crafts etc.), sustainability, vegetarianism, healthy diet and lifestyles.

willing to contribute to the local community by volunteering.

highly motivated and proactive.

able to communicate in English at least at a basic level.

- eager to work with children and the local community and organise workshops in a non-formal way.

- keen to learn about gardening and not afraid of physical work outside, insects, getting dirty etc.

- willing to take part in a vegan challenge during the project.


Expenses and Benefits

- Volunteers will be accommodation in a hostel in shared rooms with 6 other volunteers, shared bathroom and kitchen. 

- Organisers will provide Vegan lunch on working days.

- Volunteers will receive a food allowance to cover the cost of breakfasts, dinners on working days and all meals on free days

- Each volunteer will receive a Pocket money (10 EUR per day)

- EHIC (EU residents) or HENNER (non-EU residents) insurance

- Public transportation card

- Travel cost reimbursement (one return journey) up to the maximum cost as stated in the ESC programme rules according to the following limits;

  • from 10 - 99 km: 28,00€ (Standard travel) / 56,00€ (Green travel)
  • from 100 - 499 km: 211,00€ (Standard travel)  / 285,00€ (Green travel)
  • from 500 - 1999 km: 309,00€ (Standard travel) / 417€ (Green travel)
  • from 2000 - 2999 km: 396,00€ (Standard travel) / 535€ (Green travel)
Your main health coverage will be your national insurance, and you have to obtain a free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for healthcare benefits in Croatia. Apply for the card at least one month before you arrive in Croatia. The ESC program provides supplementary insurance to complement your national coverage.

Participants are entitled to receive a YouthPass certificate after the project where you can self-assess your own learning.
