If so, then this is an ideal opportunity for you to join the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) traineeship 2025-2026. EMSA envisages selecting 16 trainees. The starting date of the traineeship is 1 September 2025 until 31 August 2026. EMSA provides a monthly stipend and travel allowance for the selected trainees.

The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) was established to ensure maritime safety, security, and pollution prevention across the EU. EMSA assists the European Commission and Member States with technical, operational, and scientific support in maritime safety and pollution response.

The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) helps the European Commission and EU countries make maritime transport safer, more secure, and cleaner. They focus on preventing and responding to pollution from ships and oil and gas platforms, improving the flow of maritime traffic, and supporting coastguard cooperation across Europe. EMSA's work includes giving technical advice, checking how well countries apply EU laws, helping national authorities build their skills, managing systems that monitor ships, and stepping in during pollution emergencies. They also support neighboring non-EU countries when needed.


About EMSA Traineeships

The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) is offering a 12-month traineeship program starting from 1 September 2025 until 31 August 2026, with 16 trainee positions available across various units. This program is aimed at recent graduates who want to gain hands-on experience in areas such as communication, sustainability, maritime safety, digital services, legal affairs, and human resources.


Available Traineeship Positions

Executive Office, Communication: Two profiles supporting communication through photography, graphic design, social media content, and public relations tasks. (Fields: Communication, Graphic Design, Multimedia)

Sustainability Unit: Focus on environmental reporting, pollution response technologies, and alternative fuels studies. (Fields: Environmental Studies, Chemistry)

Visits & Inspections, Human Element: Support for maritime inspections, workshops, and development of seafarer certification platforms. (Fields: Maritime Studies)

Capacity Building, EMSA Academy unit:

Multimedia: Create educational content and support video production.

Learning Management System: Support users and maintain the Moodle-based LMS. (Fields: Multimedia, IT, Education Technology)

Safety & Security unit:

Accident Investigation: Work with the European Marine Casualty Information Platform (EMCIP).

Maritime Security (Cybersecurity): Research and develop tools for maritime cybersecurity. (Fields: ICT, Cybersecurity)

Integrated Maritime Services:

Business Support: Handle support tickets, validate maritime services, and monitor quality.

Technical Support: Investigate escalated issues and support system testing. (Fields: Maritime Management, Computer Science)

Maritime Digital Solutions, Maritime Support Services: Focus on data analysis, accident reporting, and monitoring maritime news, including data linked to geopolitical events. (Fields: Nautical Sciences, ICT)

Horizontal Digital Services, IT Service Desk: Provide first-line IT support, troubleshoot technical issues, and assist with asset management. (Fields: IT, Computer Science)

Corporate Services: Support migration projects for HR, financial, and contract management systems within EU platforms. (Fields: HR, Finance, ICT)

Human Resources & Internal Support: Assist with recruitment administration and mission organization. (Fields: HR, Social Sciences)

Legal, Finance, and Facilities: Support legal and procurement documentation, verify procurement files, and assist in maintaining the contract archive. (Field: European or Business Law).


Eligibility | Who can apply?

Candidates must be nationals of an EU Member State, Iceland, or Norway.

Completed a higher education degree (undergraduate or equivalent) no longer than three years before the application deadline.

- Excellent command of English (minimum B2 level).

- Candidates must meet the eligibility criteria and demonstrate relevant skills in their chosen position.


Expenses and Benefits

- The trainees will be awarded a monthly grant of 1359.74€ to support the living expenses during the traineeship.

Travel allowance may be given to trainees at the end of the traineeship, depending on budget availabilityTo qualify, a trainee must complete at least 3 months of the traineeship. 

Distance-based amounts (between the place of recruitment and Lisbon):

Trainees will receive, after their traineeship period, a certificate specifying the dates of their training period and the unit in which they were employed.

6. Check for Acknowledgement of Receipt: After submitting, you will receive an acknowledgement e-mail confirming that EMSA received your application.

Key Points to Remember

  • Incomplete applications will be rejected (e.g., if you don’t send your diploma copies).

  • Females are encouraged to apply (goal of 60% female trainees).
