METI Japan Internship Program 2025 (Fully Funded)

An excellent opportunity for students and graduates of higher education institutions from developing countries all over the world who are willing to gain practical work experience with a Japanese small or medium-sized company, to apply for the METI Japan Internship Program. The METI Japan Internship Program 2025 generally runs for about 30 business days (approximately 6 weeks), and all the costs regarding the participation will be covered by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) of Japan.

About the METI Japan Internship 

The METI Japan Internship Program is a government-funded initiative by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japan. It offers young professionals from developing countries the opportunity to intern at Japanese small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), either online or in-person in Japan, to promote global collaboration and workforce development.

The Internship program typically spans 30 business days, with interns working 4 hours per day, Monday through Friday. The courses  are available as :

- In-person Course: Interns travel to Japan and work on-site with the host company.

- Online Course: Interns work remotely from their home country.

As a general guideline, about 1 person per company (maximum 100 companies). The types of companies are small and medium-sized enterprises with their main business locations in Japan (excluding industry associations, non-profit organizations, and local governments).
・The host company will be selected through matching by the JIP Office.
・For the Online Course, the intern will work in their home or workspace, where they will carry out their internship under the direction and management of the host company.


Eligibility | Who can apply?

- Have citizenship of a country on the OECD/DAC list (excluding the People's Republic of China). Applicants may also apply if they live in a country other than their country of origin, including advanced countries except Japan.

- Applicants must be between 18 and 40 years of age as of 25 August 2025.

- Have proficiency in Japanese (JLPT N3+) or English.

- Student applicants must be enrolled in or have completed a junior college, technical college, or other higher education institution graduate.

- Students must be able to submit a certificate of enrollment from their affiliated university, etc., and a letter of recommendation from their affiliated university or university faculty, etc. 

- Graduates must be able to submit a graduation certificate from their affiliated university, and a letter of recommendation from their affiliated university faculty or institution, etc.

- Have not participated in this program from FY2016 to FY2024.


Expenses and Benefits

In-person Course:

- Round-trip airfare (economy class).

Visa acquisition support and travel insurance.

- The host company will provide a living environment, such as accommodation and transportation, to the company.

- daily allowance of 3,000 yen, depending on the number of days of internship stay.

- Lending of a mobile phone.


Online Course:

- Providing a communication environment such as a PC, internet, contact means, etc., necessary for internship activities.

- Daily allowance equivalent to 1,000 yen in local currency


Timeline

Application deadline: Monday, 30 June 2025

Selection and matching: July - August 2025 
  • Document screening
  • First interview (Japanese or English)
  • Submission of required documents (recommendation letters, certificates, etc.)
  • Matching process with companies
  • An optional second interview with the company
  • Final notification of acceptance
Internship start: later August 2025 or early September 2025

Internship end: After around 30 business days from the start
