"STARRY" | ESC HumAid Team Volunteering in Zanzibar, Tanzania (Fully Funded)

An excellent opportunity for young people from all over Europe who are willing to participate in a summer volunteer work for two months in Africa, to apply for the ESC Humanitarian Aid Team Volunteering project "STARRY", which takes place in Zanzibar, Tanzania, from the 15th of July to the 11th of September 2025. This HumAid Team Volunteering project is organised by "Assalam Community Foundation" and funded by the European Union through the European Solidarity Corps Programme.

About the Volunteering 

STARRY is an exciting summer volunteering project in which volunteers will work at Assalam International School, Vocational Training Center, Youth Center, and Children's University. The main activities during the volunteering project are: 

- Assist in library, lab, and art/science classes,

- Be co-teachers, teachers, or facilitators,

- Help children care for their permaculture gardens,

- Accompany children on excursions,

- Support rehearsals for showcase performances in front of the president,

- Organize trips and workshops,

- Teach basic English,

- Work in different camps (Orphan Camp, School Camp, Capacity Development Camp, Art Camp, Storytelling Camp).

Volunteers will have several training sessions during the volunteering project to enhance their abilities to perform well during the volunteering tasks. The training sessions will be as follows;

Teaching & Facilitation Skills – Methods for engaging children and youth in science, arts, and sports.

Permaculture & Sustainable Agriculture – Hands-on training in organic farming and environmental sustainability.

Event & Workshop Management – Organizing educational activities and storytelling camps.


Eligibility | Who can apply?

- Dynamic and motivated individuals aged between 18 and 35 who are passionate about education, community development, and sustainability.

- Participants must be resident in one of the following countries to be eligible ( Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Türkiye).

- Participants must be open-minded, adaptable, and culturally sensitive.

- Having an experience, background, or strong interest in education, community, work, agriculture, or youth empowerment is an advantage, but not mandatory to apply.

Willing to engage in teamwork and clear, respectful communication.

- Applicants must complete the Humanitarian Aid Training (online + 5-day face-to-face training). To get the online training, follow these instructions 


Expenses and Benefits

- The participation is free of charge.

- Volunteers will be accommodated in shared rooms (4 people per room with the same gender). 

- The accommodation place has WiFi access.

- The accommodation and the workplace are the same are so no need for local transportation.

- Three meals per day will be provided by Assalam Community Foundation, so there is no food allowance will be given.

- Each Volunteer is entitled to receive 500 EUR per month as pocket money for personal expenses.

- International travel costs from your country of residence to Tanzania and back will be covered by the programme according to the ESC rules as follows:

  • from 10 – 99 km - 56 EUR (Green Travel)/ 28 EUR (Non-Green Travel)
  • from 100 – 499 km - 285 EUR (Green Travel)/ 211 EUR (Non-Green Travel)
  • from 500 – 1999 km - 417 EUR (Green Travel)/ 309 EUR (Non-Green Travel)
  • from 2000 – 2999 km - 395 EUR (Green Travel)/ 535 EUR (Non-Green Travel)

IMPORTANT

  • Keep all your travel documents and tickets for reimbursements. No documents = No reimbursement!
  • Please send your travel proposition by email to the organisers and wait for their confirmation before purchasing your tickets!

- Participants are entitled to receive a YouthPass certificate after the project, where you are expected to self-assess your own learning, and you can add it to your CV.
