About Hansen Leadership Institute
Hansen Leadership Institute provides training in the principles, practices, and psychology of effective, ethical, and visionary leadership. We also train Hansen Fellows to be effective communicators and public speakers. In recent years, we have begun to broaden our focus to include gender issues in leadership as well. The 24/7 intensive community of our three-week program becomes a pathway to a vibrant virtual hub, where the Hansen Alum team engages, communicates, and mutually support peace and community building projects.

The University of San Diego is a private university located in Linda Vista, California, and minutes from San Diego International Airport. The university offers undergraduate degrees, graduate degrees, accreditation, and teacher preparation programs through the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, College of Nursing and Health Sciences, John Kroc College of Peace Studies, College of Business Administration, College of Law,and College of Leadership and Education Sciences. The university has 7832 students in its various study programs. It is one of the most prestigious universities in the United States.
Eligibility | Who can apply?
To be eligible to apply for the 2026 Hansen Leadership Institute, you must meet several basic requirements:
- You must be 20-25 years old on July 1, 2026
- You must have completed at least one year of college or university at the time of application.
- If you are not currently enrolled in college or university, you must be a recent graduate (2024 or 2025) to apply.
Finance and Benefits
The Hansen Summer Institute is fully funded by the Fred J. Hansen Foundation. This includes:-
- International airfare tickets for a round-trip
- Room and board
- all programmatic costs
- You will get all the necessary documentation to assist in your U.S. visa application, including a letter of acceptance, a letter defining financial support, a DS-2019 issued by the University of San Diego, and a receipt for your paid SEVIS fees.
- The only cost to participants will be the fees incurred in obtaining a passport and spending money.
Timeline
Deadline: International Applications are due January 15, 2026, by 11:30 PM Pacific Time. U.S. Applications are due March 15, 2026, by 11:30 PM Pacific Time.
Selection result: The selection committee will begin reviewing international student applications in February, and results will be emailed to all applicants in mid to late March 2026.
Program Dates: The program dates are 1-22 July 2026
Note: If selected, you will travel to the United States a few days earlier than the start date. All participants must attend the entire program.
