About the volunteering projects

Join BirdLife Malta’s Education Team to inspire and engage with children, young people, and adults about birds and the natural environment. BirdLife Malta is call volunteers from the ESC program and partner countries to join it's team for one year. As a volunteer, you will be in one of the following positions:-

Public Engagement Assistant: The Public Engagement Assistant will support BirdLife Malta’s Public Engagement team in inspiring children, young people, and adults about birds and nature. Duties include delivering school talks and activities, leading sessions at our reserves, supporting teacher training and workshops, and creating resources and events for children.

- Multimedia Communications Assistant: The Multimedia Communications Assistant will support BirdLife Malta’s Public Engagement team by creating engaging visual content to raise the organisation’s profile. Duties include designing printed materials and the quarterly magazine, producing graphics for web and social media, editing photos and videos, and supporting media work during events and migration camps.

- Nature Reserves Visitor Assistant: Nature Reserves Visitor Assistant helps "BirdLife Malta" welcome visitors to their nature reserves – Għadira, Simar, Foresta 2000, and Salina. Main duties include helping with habitat maintenance and conservation work, opening and preparing reserves for visitors, greeting and giving visitors tours of the reserves, and managing reception areas and nature shop while promoting BirdLife Malta membership.

IT Conservation Assistant: IT Conservation Assistant volunteer will be working on technology-based projects that support bird conservation – from live bird-webcam streams and online migration atlases to digitizing valuable historical bird records. You’ll also get to join fieldwork activities and see your work in action, protecting Malta’s birdlife.


Eligibility | Who can apply?

- Young people aged between 18 and 30 on the first day of the project

- A citizen of one of the programme or partner countries

Outgoing, friendly, keen to meet new people, socialise, and experience a different culture

- Interested in improving bird, flora, and other taxa identification skills

- Interested in inspiring and educating people about birds and the natural world

- Willing to develop administration, time management, numeracy, and interpersonal skills

Willing to learn and have an adaptable approach in line with the needs of a charitable organisation’s structure, including working flexibly and occasional long hours, which could include weekends and public holidays.

- Having a good command of English.


Expenses and Benefits

The European Solidarity Corps programme will provide you with the following

Accommodation close to "BirdLife" offices in Ta’ Xbiex or in the northern part of the island, close to the nature reserves

Utilities such as electricity, water, gas, and internet.

Reimbursement of the flight and other transport costs (bus, train, metro) to/from Malta, limited according to distance.

- Monthly allowance of 380 Euros.

Private HEALTH insurance provided by Henner.

Reimbursement of the flight and other transport costs (bus, train, metro) to/from Malta, limited according to the distance between your home origin and the project venue.

- YouthPass certificate upon completing the programme.


Timeline

Application deadline: 30th September 2025 at 23.00 CET time

Selection results: Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, within a maximum of 2 weeks after submitting the application

Arrival day: 1st of November / 1st of December 2025, depends on the position

Departure day: 30th of October / 30 of December 2025
