An excellent opportunity for BSc and MSc students from all over the world who are interested in research careers in any field of engineering, science, and technology to join the EPFL Excellence in Engineering (E3) Program in Switzerland. All selected students will receive a monthly allowance for the entire duration of the internship to cover accommodation and living costs in Switzerland.
About the Program
The EPFL Excellence in Engineering (E3) Program provides an immersive research training experience for Bachelor’s and Master’s students who are passionate about pursuing research careers in engineering, science, or technology.
As an E3 intern, you will join an EPFL research group for 8 to 12 weeks during the summer. The starting and ending dates are flexible to align with your academic schedule and the availability of your host professor. Both the internship topic and exact dates will be agreed upon during the selection process.
During your stay at EPFL, you’ll become an active member of your host laboratory and the wider EPFL community. The E3 program also organizes a special workshop and various social events for all participating interns.
EPFL E3 Program offers a summer research experience in the following fields: biology, neurotechnology, bioengineering, chemistry, mathematics, physics, microengineering, mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science
Eligibility | Who can apply?
- International students who are enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's Program at the time of the application and the entire summer internship duration. Students enrolled in PhD programs are not eligible.
- At the time of application, you should have successfully completed at least your second Bachelor's degree in any field of engineering, science, or technology.
Selection Criteria
- You are among the top 10% of your class with a high GPA.
- You plan to pursue PhD studies. Previous laboratory experience is a plus.
- Your application package should convince the selection committee of your excellence and passion for science. Your statement of purpose reflects your ambition, career goals, and explains your choice of host laboratories.
Expenses and Conditions
- Accepted students will receive a monthly living allowance of 1800 CHF to cover their housing and living expenses.
- Travel costs will be refunded on request, upon approval by the host lab, and costs related to the visa request might be partially covered (see question related to visa).
- You will be in charge of finding your accommodation. The administrative personnel will almost invariably suggest a list of places where to look for it (student forums, billboards, student residences, etc.).

- your academic transcripts (if not available in English or French, you can translate them into English by yourself, but please include the original version provided by your university too)
- Motivation letter where you explain your research statement
