About the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship
Stipendium Hungaricum is the Hungarian Government’s most prestigious higher education scholarship programme, which offers a wide range of courses for high-achieving international students with an excellent academic track record. The scholarship aims to support the internationalisation of Hungarian higher education and its constant development, strengthen the international relations of the academic and research community, and promote the good reputation and competitiveness of Hungarian higher education worldwide.
The programme, founded by the Hungarian Government in 2013, is supervised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and managed by the Tempus Public Foundation.
It is based on bilateral education agreements between Hungary and the governments of the sending countries. It is available on five continents in over 90 countries, attracting tens of thousands of international students each year. Applicants are offered more than 1200 full degree programmes, covering all higher education fields at all degree levels, including part-time and doctoral programmes.

- Applicants must be at least 18 years old on August 31, 2026
- Applicants must be nominated by their sending partners (find the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Partner in your country here)
- Applicants must have the same citizenship as their sending partners. for ex. Egyptian citizens can apply only through the Egyptian sending Partner.
- If you're applying for English-taught programmes, an English language certificate with level B2 will be required, such as IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, etc.
- To study in Hungarian, applicants must provide proof of Hungarian language skills and pass a language test during the entrance exam.
Financial Conditions and Benefits
- Tuition-free education – exemption from the payment of the tuition fee
- Monthly stipend for contributing to the living expenses in Hungary, for 12 months a year, until the completion of studies, as follows:
- HUF 43,700 (EUR 110) - for Bachelor's, Master's, and non-degree programs
- HUF 140,000 (EUR 355) - for Doctoral degree programs - for the first phase of education (4 semesters) and HUF 180,000 (EUR 460) for the second phase (4 semesters) – for 12 months a year, until completion of studies.
- Free dormitory place for accommodation OR a contribution of HUF 40,000 (100 EUR) per month to accommodation costs for the whole duration of the scholarship period.
- Medical insurance – health care services according to the relevant Hungarian legislation and supplementary medical insurance for up to HUF 65,000 (cca 165 EUR) a year/person.
- Stipensium Hungaricum Scholarship doesn't cover the costs of the travel tickets from your home country to Hungary and back.
Please bear in mind that these provisions are only a contribution to the living expenses of the Scholarship Holders. It means that it does not fully cover all the costs of living, and the students need to add their own financial resources in order to cover all living expenses in Hungary.
Basic Application Documents
All applicants must upload the required documents to the online system by 15 January 2026, 2 p.m. (max file size: 4 MB). Only the medical certificate is not uploaded; it is brought to Hungary only if you are selected. The required documents as follows;
1. Online Application Form: Must be filled in English and must include a recent photo (taken within 2 years). Exchange applicants must state the length and start date of their studies.
2. Motivation Letter: Minimum 1 page, Times New Roman 12. Written in the language of the programme or in Hungarian.
3. Proof of Language Proficiency: Upload the language certificate required by the university + translation (if needed). If your previous studies were in the same language, proof can be uploaded until 30 September 2026.
4. School Certificates + Translations
- Bachelor applicants: high school certificate.
- Master applicants: a bachelor's degree certificate.
- One-tier master: high school certificate.
- Preparatory (Hungarian): high school certificate.
- Exchange studies: a student status certificate proving you will still be enrolled during the exchange.
Translation required only if the document is not in the programme language or Hungarian/English.
5. Transcript of Records: Transcript of all completed semesters + translation (if needed).
6. Identification Document: Scan of passport data page (or national ID if no passport).
7. Statement for Application: Must be accepted inside the online system (no need to upload a signed copy).
8. Medical Certificate (ONLY for selected scholarship holders): Must be issued after 1 November 2025. Bring it to Hungary for the compulsory medical exam; do not upload it.
Important Note: Any document not originally in the programme language or Hungarian must include a translation.
Timeline
Application deadline: You should submit your application to TPF and to the sending partner in your country before 15 January 2026 (2:00 PM CET)
First Selection Point (Technical check): 28 February 2026
Statement of the Supervisor: If required by the proposed Doctoral school until 15 March 2026
Second Selection Point: Institutional admission procedure between the Middle of March and the end of May 2026
Selection result: Notification about the Selection results by the end of June to the middle of July 2026
Visa application process: July-August 2026
Arrival in Hungary: until 30 September 2026
How to apply?
Step 1: Find your chosen programme. You can start an application in the DreamApply system and select the relevant study programme. You can check the list of sending partners and eligible study fields here.
Step 2: Contact your sending partner. Applications shall also be submitted to the responsible authority of the sending partner. Each sending partner might have different deadlines and requirements for submitting the application material.
Step 3: Register and upload your documents. Applications are processed in an online application system (apply.stipendiumhungaricum.hu). You have only 2 choices to apply for. Make sure that your chosen programmes are relevant to the field of your studies.
Step 4: Submit your application by the deadline of 15 January 2026. Make sure all the required documents are attached and all the required fields are filled out properly before submitting your application.
Step 5: Online Entrance exams at Hungarian Universities. Your exam scores must be a minimum of 56 out of 100 points for your application to be considered for the final list of scholarship awardees.
