About the GovAI Summer Fellowship

The GovAI Summer Research Fellowship 2026 offers participants an immersive opportunity to deepen their expertise in AI governance. Fellows spend three months conducting independent, policy-relevant research on a topic of their choice, guided by supervisors from GovAI’s team or affiliate network.

The fellowship begins with an initial exploration phase, during which fellows familiarise themselves with the AI governance landscape and refine their research proposal with expert input. Research outputs may include policy reports, white papers, journal articles, op-eds, or blog posts, depending on the fellow’s goals and audience. Alongside research, fellows participate in Q&A sessions with AI governance experts, seminars, skills-building workshops, peer feedback meetings, and networking events. GovAI also supports fellows in exploring follow-on career opportunities in academia, government, industry, or think tanks.

The program is designed to foster rigorous research, intellectual honesty, and real-world impact, preparing participants to meaningfully contribute to the future of AI governance.


Eligibility | Who can apply?

Applicants from all countries are welcome to apply. The fellowship is open to:

- Early-career individuals exploring AI governance as a career path

- Established professionals seeking to transition into the AI governance field

- Applicants from diverse academic and professional backgrounds, including (but not limited to): Public Policy, Political Science, Computer Science, Economics, International Relations, Sociology, Philosophy, Law, Risk Management, Cybersecurity, Biosecurity, and China Studies.

- Additional requirements:

  • No strict degree or educational background is required
  • Strong interest in AI governance and its societal implications
  • Strong research, reasoning, and writing skills
  • No age limit


Expenses and Benefits

Fellows will receive a stipend of £12,000 for renting and personal expenses during the three months.

- Fellows will get travel support for travelling to London.

Organisers provide Fellows with lunch on weekdays and a desk in the new London office.

Visa sponsorship for a 3-month temporary work visa (if required). 

Please note: you will need to remain in your country of visa application for some time while the visa application is underway.
