About the volunteering
An exciting volunteering opportunity for young people aged between 18 and 30 from European countries who are passionate about sustainability and community engagement. Volunteers will be based in Nurmes, Eastern Finland, working with the Green Key–certified Hyvärilä Youth Centre to promote sustainable tourism, biodiversity, and eco-friendly lifestyles.
What will you do as a volunteer?
- Organize sustainability workshops for the local community (children, youth & seniors)
- Run environmental awareness campaigns on social media
- Take part in upcycling and eco-education activities
- Learn how a certified sustainable youth centre reduces tourism’s environmental impact
- Engage closely with a rural North Karelian community
Volunteers are expected to work between 30 and 35 hours per week, with 2 days off weekly.
Eligibility | Who can apply?
- Young people aged between 18 and 30 years old and residing in one of the following countries (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine)
- Volunteers who like to stay in a small and isolated rural community surrounded by nature and serenity;
- Openness to meeting the local community and individuals from diverse backgrounds is essential.
- The project is well-suited for individuals interested in traditional culture, arts and crafts, nature and outdoor activities, cooking, and sustainability.
- Ability to stay the whole duration of the project;
- Able to speak and understand English. Your English does not have to be perfect;
- No experience is needed to participate in this project.
- Interest in sustainability, nature and outdoor activities is a plus.
Expenses and Benefits
- Participants will be accommodated in hostel accommodation in Hyvärilä youth centre on the shore of lake Pielinen, surrounded by forest and water.
- One room will be shared by two or three participants with shared showers and bathrooms.w Bed linens and towels are provided.
- Meals are served in the cafeteria, and some volunteers cook together. The food is mostly vegan and vegetarian, ensuring it is both good and healthy.
- Volunteers will have a chance to use saunas on designated days.
- Volunteers can use bicycles to go to Nurmes town (approx. 3.5 km away).
- Participants are entitled to receive 7 euros per day as pocket money according to ESC rules.
- Travel costs are covered based on the distance between the participant's place of origin and the activity venue, according to the Erasmus+ distance band calculator, as follows:
- from 10–99 km - €28 (standard travel) - €56 (green travel)
- from 100–499 km - €211 (standard travel) - €285 (green travel)
- from 500–1,999 km - €309 (standard travel) - €417 (green travel)

- Participants are entitled to receive a YouthPass certificate after the project, where you are expected to self-assess your own learning, and you can add it to your CV.
