About Idrija

Idrija is a town of some 6.000 inhabitants and is located in Western Slovenia, halfway between the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, and the Italian border.

Idrija is a town of rich cultural and natural heritage. It boasts the title of “the oldest Slovenian mining town” as the first miners began to search for mercury here in 1490. Later, 2nd largest mercury mine developed and Idrija became one of the most important mining centers in Central Europe. The broader town area has since 2012 been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List with its heritage of mercury. There are many opportunities for exploring, as the town is filled with museums and monuments of technical heritage. Especially famous is the Anthony Shaft, the oldest entrance into Idrija‘s underworld and is to this day open for visitors.

About the project

Idrija Youth Center organised successfully 3 group volunteering projects named Make house alive. These three projects helped in renovating the youth centre into a hostel for youth travellers. This year volunteering project is about improving the centre with a group volunteer initiative that will concentrate on the terrace.

With your help, the organisers hope to turn the terrace into a multipurpose space that can host events like concerts and workshops in addition to serving as a welcoming hangout for Idrija's young residents. With the help of an experienced interior designer, you will have the chance to learn about the wants and needs of today's youth and come up with ideas for customising the space to suit them. You will be able to learn about the basic principles of space design and unleash your creativity by designing the perfect space for Idrija youth from recycled materials.

The project will be divided into 4 stages:

Exploring: In the first part, the group will get to know each other and  the needs of Idrija youth as well as get to know the basic theory of designing a space for youth.

PlaningIn the next stage, we will start to plan the space under the guidance of a mentor knowledgeable in space design.

CreatingIn the third stage, we will start creating the pieces we planned. We will mostly be using material gathered at the local collection centre

OpeningWhen the space is ready to host the visitors, we will create a small event for the local youth to showcase the work we did during the project and the competencies we gained. We will also gather the Idrija youth’s impressions and ideas for future events on the new terrace.
