About INSAIT
INSAIT (Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Technology) is a cutting-edge research institute in Sofia, Bulgaria, established in April 2022 in partnership with ETH Zurich and EPFL. It is the first of its kind in Eastern Europe, supported by top academics from elite global universities and research labs, along with major tech companies like Google, AWS, DeepMind, and VMware. Focused on scientific excellence, INSAIT aims to conduct world-class research, attract top international scientists, and train future technology leaders. It operates as a special unit of Sofia University with its own governance.
About INSAIT Fellowship program
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) 2025 offers undergraduate students from all over the world the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge research under the mentorship of INSAIT faculty. Modeled on prestigious programs at MIT, Caltech, and ETH Zurich, SURF provides an opportunity to contribute to impactful projects in computer science and AI.
This is the third edition of SURF, following the successful launches in 2023 and 2024. Similarly to the first two cohorts, Organisers are expecting that all participants will actively contribute to ongoing projects in their groups and have the opportunity to co-author paper submissions to top computer science and AI conferences.
Eligibility | Who can apply?
- Undergraduate students enrolled in Bachelor degree program at accredited university from any country around the world.
- Students should be enrolled in a STEM major such as Computer science, Mathematics, Physics, or Engineering.
- Students should have GPA (3.5/4) or equivalent in the corresponding grading system.
- Applicants from such communities which generally underrepresented in STEM field are encouraged to apply.
- Students must be with good level in English since it's the language of the fellowship program.
Expenses and Benefits
- Selected students will receive a monthly stipend of 1500 euros to support their living expenses during the fellowship program
- Accommodation will be arranged and covered by the INSAIT in addition to the monthly stipend.
- Travel costs to and back from Sofia will be covered by INSAIT in addition to visa assistance for students who need a visa to travel to Bulgaria.

Note: The length of the research program between 8 to 12 weeks and cannot be exceed 12 weeks.
