ISTernship Summer Program 2024 in Austria 2024 (Fully Funded)

An excellent opportunity for all the international students and fresh graduates to apply for ISTernship Summer Program for 2-3 months at The Institute of Science and Technology of Austria in Vienna, Austria. The ISTernship program is developed in cooperation with OeAD, the Austrian Agency for International Cooperation in Education and Research and it's fully funded program for all interns.

About ISTA

The Institute of Science and Technology of Austria is an international research institute in the natural and mathematical sciences, located in Maria Gogging, Klosterneuburg, 20 km northwest of the Austrian capital Vienna. It was established and opened by the Lower Austria Provincial Government and the Austrian Federal Government in 2009.


About ISTernship Program

The ISTernship (“IST-” + “(int)ernship“) is a summer internship program at The Institute of Science and Technology of Austria (ISTA). ISTernship offers research opportunities to Bachelor's and Master's students interested in biology, computer science, data science, mathematics, physics, neuroscience, and interdisciplinary areas.

ISTernship program started for the first time in 2013, each summer, selected applicants join the program and work closely with ISTA faculty or a lab member on a short research project. 

Upon arrival, ISTerns receive an introduction to research at IST Austria as well as an introduction to the IST Austria Graduate School. The program culminates with a research seminar, in which ISTerns present their work to their peers, faculty, and lab mentors. The courses are full-time and will be conducted exclusively in English.


Eligibility

- Applicants from all countries are welcome to apply.

- Applicants must be enrolled Bachelor or Master of Science student. Bachelor students must have completed at least 4 semesters of their bachelor's studies before the respective start date.

- Applicants who graduated with a bachelor’s or master’s degree within a year from the program start date, are also eligible to apply. Students accepted to or enrolled in a PhD program are not eligible to apply.

- Students who are interested in basic research in the fields of biology, computer science, data science, mathematics, physics,  and neuroscience encouraged to apply.

- No language certificates are required for the application, however you may upload a language certificate for English if you want to.

Note: All short-term mobility programs between ISTA and Russia have been suspended. As a result, any applicants currently enrolled in universities located in Russia are ineligible to apply for the ISTernship call.

Financial support and Benefits

ISTernship Summer Program is fully funded an includes:

All ISTerns receive a monthly stipend of around 1,000 euros

- ISTerns will have the option of living on campus in apartments owned and administered by ISTA or in Vienna's student housing run by OeAD at a reduced cost.

- All ISTerns will have access to health insurance as soon as you start your ISTernship program at ISTA.

- All ISTerns receive an allowance for their travel costs and assistance for visa arrangements if it's needed. 

- After accepting your offer to the ISTernship, you will receive the official scholarship document from OeAD. In case you need a visa for coming to Austria, OeAD will send a confirmation to the respective Austrian representative.


Required Documents

1. CV/Resume in English, include:

  • your educational history from high school onwards
  • relevant work experience
  • additional qualifications
  • list of publications (if any)
  • scholarships, awards, etc ( if any)

2. University transcripts ,diplomas of current and completed or previous degrees in English.

3. Statement of purpose: a one-page essay in which you explain.

  • your research experience and the research area(s) you find the most interesting
  • your motivation for applying to the ISTA ISTernship program
  • which professor(s) you are interested in doing research with
4. Contact of 1 (minimum) or 2 (maximum) referees: 

The referee(s) should be someone who taught or supervised your work in an academic setting.
  •   their names
  •   institutions, and
  •   email addresses
The referee(s) will be contacted directly by ISTA (by email) and will be asked to submit a reference letter for you via the system. The reference letter is needed to complete your application.


Duration

the duration of ISTernship is a minimum of 2 months and maximum of 3 months taking place between 15 May 2024 and 15 September 2024. The duration of the ISTernship program is agreed between ISTern and professor after the selection process is completed


Timeline

Application Deadline: Application is now open until February 15, 2024 (15:00 CET)

Application Result: All complete applications will receive the result from March 31, 2024. Selected applicants will need to accept the offer within about a week.

Program Period: 2-3 Months
