If you are interested in learning about healthy lifestyle and cultural heritage in the rural communities of Bulgaria, then this is an ideal opportunity for you to join the teams volunteering project "Eyes Wide Open" in Bulgaria for one month in Djurovo Region, Bulgaria. This program is hosted and organised by Synergy Bulgaria and funded by the European Solidarity Corps program of the European Union.

About the project

"Eyes Wide Open" is a 4-week ESC team volunteering project, promoting healthy lifestyle and cultural heritage in the rural communities of Bulgaria. The project focuses on the connections among environment, cultural heritage protection, healthy lifestyle, and cultural traditions. We believe in the relation among a healthy lifestyle, sustainability and cultural heritage, and giving you the opportunity to learn from the experienced facilitators who will run the project, create your own impact and contribute to the stronger relationship between the local environment and cultural traditions.

During the project period, participants will have the chance to develop skills like:

- Healthy lifestyle practices

- Hands-on work

- Contributing to the life of marginalised local communities

- Learn to live in a small community and share with people with diverse backgrounds

Preserve and promote cultural landscapes in local areas

- Build relationship with the natural environment

- Environmentally friendly practices

- Skills for planning and implementing your own project/initiative


Eligibility | Who can apply

- Resident in one of the European Solidarity Corps program countries, check the list HERE

- Applicants must be aged between 18-30 years old (not older than 31 years on the 1st of May 2024);

- Ready to live in a small community with people from across Europe;

- Ready to live a healthy lifestyle and participate in cultural heritage preservation;

Ready to learn more and experience practical and physical work;

Ready to create a personal project or personal initiative may help the others;

Ready to connect and bring positive change to local communities;

- Able to live in a rural natural environment of Bulgaria mountains with basic conditions for four weeks;

- Able to share different cultures and understand different people in a supporting community;

- The priority in the selection of the participants will be given to those who are coming from hard backgrounds or facing social, personal and economic obstacles.


Practical condition & Benefits

- Participants will be accommodated in "Synergy House" - Educational & Retreat Center, created by Synergy Bulgaria and opened in 2022 as a centre for non-formal education & youth work.

- Participants will have shared bedrooms with essential furniture, bed sheets, etc. 

- Participants have access to use Outdoor sleeping areas with tents and Shared bathrooms and toilets with all necessary toiletries.

- Each participant will receive 5 EUR/day for your living money.

- Participants will receive a weekly food allowance for the group to cook all together in the kitchen area

- Your travel costs will be reimbursed according to the distance between your home and Sofia according to the following limits:

  • for travel distance between 100 and 499 km: 180 EUR / person, +30 EUR extra for Green travel.
  • for travel distance between 500 and 1999 km: 275 EUR / person, +45 EUR extra for Green travel.
  • for travel distance between 2000 and 2999 km: 360 EUR / person, +50 EUR extra for Green travel.

  • IMPORTANT: keep all your travel documents! Online boarding passes and tickets for reimbursements. No documents = No reimbursement!
  • IMPORTANT: Please send your travel proposition per e-mail to the organisers and wait for their confirmation before purchasing your tickets!
- The organisers are going to meet you in Sofia and arrange a group transfer to the Synergy House in Djurovo Region.

- Participants will receive a YouthPass certificate after the project where you are expected to self-assess your own learning and you can add it to your CV.
