Waves of Solidarity | ESC Volunteering in Gdansk, Poland (Fully Funded)

An excellent opportunity for 20 young people from European countries to join a one-month team volunteering in Gdansk, Poland to support "Regional Volunteer Center in Gdańsk" in organising some events and educational activities. This project is supported and funded by the European Solidarity Corps programme of the European Union.

About Gdansk

Gdansk is the capital of of the Pomeranian Voivodeship. It’s located in the north, right by the Baltic sea. With around 486.000 citizen, it’s one of the largest Polish cities. In 2022 Gdansk became European Volunteering Capital. This title is the result of the enormous involvement of Gdansk residents in voluntary activities.

In Gdańsk, visitors can explore the charming Old Town with its colorful facades and historic landmarks like St. Mary's Church and the Neptune Fountain. Dive into the city's rich history by visiting sites such as the European Solidarity Centre and Westerplatte, where World War II began. Enjoy leisurely walks along the Motława River, take in panoramic views from St. Mary's Church tower, and delve into the cultural significance of amber at the Amber Museum. With its blend of history, culture, and picturesque surroundings, Gdańsk offers a captivating experience for travelers.


About the Project

The "Regional Volunteer Center in Gdańsk" are looking for 20 volunteers from European countries to join its major social and international events are taking place in Gdansk. The volunteers will support the host organisation in three major events which are:

- The festival of Democracy "FREEDOM AND CIVIL RIGHTS DAY", 4th of June

Freedom and Civil Rights Day is celebrated to commemorate the anniversary of the 1989 parliamentary elections, which were the first partially free elections in Poland since the Second World War. Those elections marked the beginning of the country's political transformation from a communist system to a parliamentary democracy. In Gdańsk, this day is celebrated in a special way from 2019 onwards. Events such as concerts by the best Polish bands, debates, meetings and 4 conferences are organised every year.

- The festival of International understanding "HANSA", 13-16th of June

Hansa is a network of approx. 200 towns around the Baltic and Northern Sea which cultivates its medieval heritage and cooperation. Each year another Hanseatic city is the host and invites everyone to celebrate tradition and international understanding.

The world of the Hanseatic League comes alive at the Hanseatic Days in numerous activities, markets and exhibitions. Many Hanseatic cities will be represented with their own stands at the Hanseatic Market.

- The festival of intergenerational understanding "SENIOR PARADE IN GDAŃSK", 17th of June

The Senior Parade and Picnic traditionally starts at Neptune's Fountain, and fills the heart of Gdańsk with crowds of colourful seniors. The parade and picnic usually take place around 15 June - World Elderly Rights Day. This unique event is dedicated to people who want to spend time in a joyful atmosphere, be active, make new friends and celebrate their energy.

The tasks for the volunteers during the project will be as following:

  • Supporting activities
  • Organisational activities
  • Promoting activities
  • Educational activities
  • Create your own activity/ workshop

Expenses and Benefits

- Volunteers will live in shared rooms with other volunteers in a student dormitory.

- Volunteers will receive a Volunteer ID which allows you enjoy for free the public transportation 

- Each volunteer is entitled to get a pocket money of 4-5 Euro/ day by the rules of the program.

- Your travel costs will be reimbursed according to the distance between your home and Gdansk according to the following limits:

  • for travel distance between 100 and 499 km: 180 EUR / person, +30 EUR extra for Green travel.
  • for travel distance between 500 and 1999 km: 275 EUR / person, +45 EUR extra for Green travel.
  • for travel distance between 2000 and 2999 km: 360 EUR / person, +50 EUR extra for Green travel.

  • IMPORTANT: keep all your travel documents! Online boarding passes and tickets for reimbursements. No documents = No reimbursement!
  • IMPORTANT: Please send your travel proposition per e-mail to the organisers and wait for their confirmation before purchasing your tickets!
- Participants will receive a YouthPass certificate after the project where you are expected to self-assess your own learning and you can add it to your CV.


Eligibility | Who can apply?

This project is addressed to 20 volunteers from Hanseatic countries who met the following requirements:

- You are living in one of these countries (Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Iceland, Lithuania, Latvia, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Ukraine, Italy, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Romania)

- Aged between 18-30 years old by the time of the project.

- Ready to work irregular time shifts and available for the whole project time.

- Able to communicate and work fluently in English.

- Strong motivation to work at an international event.

- Creativity and independence at work. 


What to bring?

- ID or Passport or any other document you use for travel.

- Towels, flip flops, hygiene products, and a hairdryer, if you need one.

- Medicine, if you have any specific illness or medical condition.

- Your flight tickets, bus tickets, train tickets, or any proof you have that you came to Gdansk.

Arrival day: 20th of May 2024

Departure day: 19th of June 2024
