An open call for young people who are concerned about sustainability and want to act on it to apply for a short-term ESC team volunteering project "Green Week" which will take place in Nurmes, Finland. The project lasts for two weeks to celebrate the EU Green Week. The project is organised by Hyvärilä youth centre and funded by the European Solidarity Corps programme of the European Union.
About the volunteering
Hyvärilä youth centre is inviting young people from EU countries and Ukraine to join its team volunteering project "Green Week". volunteers will organise various workshops for the local community in Nurmes, Eastern Finland to celebrate the EU Green Week. Hyvärilä youth centre is 3,5 km away from Nurmes town. Closest big towns are Joensuu and Kuopio, both 2 hours away. It takes 7 hours to get to Nurmes from Helsinki by train.
Additionally, volunteers will learn about how Hyvärilä youth centre as Green Key certified destination reduces the negative impact of tourism.
Volunteers work 30-35 hours per week, with two days off to recharge. You'll take part in a variety of tasks across different locations, giving you a well-rounded experience of life in the rural North Karelian community. Expect to dive into sustainable tourism and biodiversity, participate in up-cycling workshops, lead an environmental campaign on social media, connect with locals of all ages, and plan activities together with them. Volunteers are expected to be eager to raise awareness via social media channels and ready to share their tips on being sustainable.
Eligibility | Who can apply?
- Young people aged between 18-30 and residing in an European Union country or Ukraine;
- Volunteers who are interested in sustainability , nature and outdoor activities;
- Able to communicate in English in daily life activities;
- Open minded, openness to meet local people (children, youth, seniors) and people from different backgrounds.
- People who are prepared to stay in a small and isolated rural community surrounded by nature and serenity.
- There is no experience needed to participate in this project.
Expenses and Benefits
- Volunteers stay in Hyvärilä youth centre on the shore of lake Pielinen, surrounded by forest and water.
- Accommodation will be in a youth hostel, 2-3 volunteers per room with shared bathrooms and showers, and a living room.
- Most meals are served at the restaurant of the youth centre. Some dinners are cooked by volunteers for the whole group in shifts. Prepare to cook food for your teammates at least once.
- Each volunteer receives 6 EUR/ day as a pocket money.
- Travel cost reimbursement (one return journey) up to the maximum cost as stated in the ESC programme rules according to the following limits;
- from 10 - 99 km: 28,00€ (Standard travel) / 56,00€ (Green travel)
- from 100 - 499 km: 211,00€ (Standard travel) / 285,00€ (Green travel)
- from 500 - 1999 km: 309,00€ (Standard travel) / 417€ (Green travel)
- from 2000 - 2999 km: 396,00€ (Standard travel) / 535€ (Green travel)
