Suomenlinna World Heritage | ESC Volunteering in Helsinki, Finland (Fully Funded)

About host organisation

The Suomenlinna Governing Body is a governmental agency that takes care of the Suomenlinna Fortress, which is really important and recognised by UNESCO. They fix it up, keep it in good shape, manage it, and show it to people. Their job is to make sure the fortress and all its history stay safe for the future. The Finnish government has promised to keep special sites like Suomenlinna in the best condition possible. The Suomenlinna Governing Body also plans events, like the Suomenlinna World Heritage Volunteer camp in August 2024. It's a project where volunteers from the European Solidarity Corps help out at Suomenlinna.

Volunteer's tasks

The main task for the volunteers will be to help with fixing up and making the area around Suomenlinna Fortress look nice, with guidance from the site managers and specialists. The longest task during the project which will take three whole days, will be focusing on restoring historical cannons with the help of a Building Restorer. They'll also do shorter projects like tidying up the land by removing plants that shouldn't be there. Volunteers will also get to learn about sustainable tourism and spend time with a local partner, Ryhmäteatteri Summer Theatre, for part of an afternoon. They'll have a chance to learn a lot about Suomenlinna's history too. There will be discussions about World Heritage, why it's important to keep places like Suomenlinna authentic and well-preserved, and about being socially and ecologically responsible. Each volunteer will also get to teach others about a World Heritage Site from their own country. Plus, there's a special day where locals are invited to join in and help with landscaping work at the site.
