Now! AFS Interkultur offers many volunteering projects for young people for a period of 6-12 months in different places all over Denmarkrk starting from summer 2026. All these volunteering programs will be funded by the European Solidarity Corps programme of the European Commission.

About AFS Interkultur

AFS Interkultur is a partner in the worldwide youth exchange organisation, American Field Service network, represented in over 55 countries. Established in Denmark in 1957, it is the country's oldest and largest non-profit youth exchange organisation, with 20 staff, 30+ local chapters (including in Greenland and the Faroe Islands), and over 2,000 members, many of whom are volunteers. AFS focuses on fostering intercultural understanding and reducing prejudice by promoting connections across cultural differences.

Over the past 50 years, AFS Interkultur has facilitated exchanges with nearly 50 countries and gained significant experience in intercultural learning. Since 1997, it has participated in the European Solidarity Corps as a sending, hosting, and coordinating organisation.

AFS offers programs for:

  • High school exchanges for youth aged 15-18 (hosting and sending).
  • Gap year opportunities for adults 18+ to study abroad.
  • Volunteering programs in Europe, Africa, Asia, Central and South America, and Australia (hosting and sending).

About the volunteering projects

At the moment there are 13 different long-term ESC Volunteering projects for young people aged between 18-30 years in different cities in Denmark in a places such as AFS Office, high school, free school, agriculture school, youth college, technical university, youth club, etc. in the following lines there is a list for these places which you may be interested to choose on of them and spend unforgettable 6-12 months there with a lot of experience. 

1. Øhavets Smakke- og Naturcenter 

A nature and maritime centre on the island of Strynø, focused on sailing, island culture, and outdoor education. Volunteers support exhibitions, traditional boat building, and nature-based learning activities.

2. AFS Interkultur 

Denmark’s largest and oldest youth exchange NGO promoting intercultural understanding worldwide. Volunteers support exchange programs, trainings, and the coordination of international youth activities.

3. AFS Interkultur 18+ Committee 

An international volunteer committee representing 10 nationalities within AFS Denmark. Focused on planning activities, supporting exchange students, and developing future intercultural initiatives.

4. Halvorsminde Efterskole & Fri Fagskole 

A residential school for youth aged 14–18 combining academic, vocational, and creative education. Volunteers take part in daily school life and support learning, community, and youth development.

5. Balleskolen, Silkeborg 

A large public primary school emphasising collaboration, music, and character development. Volunteers contribute to school life while promoting cultural exchange and global awareness.

6. Brenderup Højskole 

A Danish folk high school with sustainability as its core focus. Volunteers live on campus and support multicultural learning and community-based activities.

7. Ranum Efterskole College 

An internationally oriented boarding school offering diverse subjects like media, adventure, and arts. Volunteers contribute to the school’s global atmosphere and student activities.

8. EgÃ¥ Ungdomshøjskole 

A creative youth folk high school near Aarhus for students aged 16½–19. Volunteers support arts, sports, and international community life in a bilingual environment.

9. Kalø Økologiske Landbrugsskole – Kitchen 

Northern Europe’s oldest organic farming school with a strong ecological and community focus. Volunteers assist in kitchen work while engaging in an international, sustainable living environment.

10. Kalø Økologiske Landbrugsskole – Farming 

An organic farming school trains future farmers in sustainable agriculture. Volunteers help with farming, animal care, and daily school activities.

11. Ribe Ungdomshøjskole 

A youth folk high school combining democracy, creativity, sustainability, and outdoor life. Volunteers join an international community supporting learning without exams.

12. Kulturfabrikken 

A cultural hub where young people engage in arts, music, sports, and social activities. Volunteers support events, workshops, café life, and youth engagement.

13. DTU – Technical University of Denmark 

An elite international technical university focused on sustainability and innovation. Volunteers support international student services and cultural integration activities.


Eligibility | Who can apply?

- Applicants must be between 18 and 30 years old. For some opportunities, the ones mentioned above, they may have a specific age limit of being over 20 years of age.

- You have to be a resident in one of the following countries, which are a part of the program: Albania, Algeria, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Kosovo, Latvia, Lebanon, Libya, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Morocco, Moldova, Montenegro, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Palestine, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Syria, The Czech Republic, Tunisia, Turkey, and Ukraine.

The volunteer should be open-minded and able to speak English on a conversational level. 


Expenses and Benefits

As a part of the European Solidarity Corps program, the following is covered by the host organisation:

- International transport is covered to a certain amount. The EU sets a budget depending on the distance to our office. If you travel in a green way, your budget will be higher!

- Health insurance

- Food and accommodation

- Allowance and pocket money of 380 euros/month in total: 360 euros (decided by the department of the EU) + 20 euros from the local AFS department.

- Transportation is covered from home to project and from home to language school (if chosen).

- Working hours: 30-38 hours/week ( 5 days per week). All volunteers save up to 2 holidays every month.


Timeline

Application deadline: 1st of February 2026

Arrival day: 1st of May 2026 or 1st of August 2026

Departure day: 31st of July 2027

Note: The exact length of the mobility depends on the funding from the EU commission
